Changes to the Employment Insurance maximum insurable earnings and benefit came into effect on January 1, 2018.
The maximum insurable earnings has increased to $51,700 per year. The maximum weekly EI benefit is now up to $547.
For employees whose short-term disability (STD) plans have a maximum benefit set at the EI maximum, rather than a separate specific amount, that maximum automatically increased January 1. For those whose STD plans are set at a specific dollar amount (and if that amount is less than $547 per week) and who participate in an EI premium reduction program, the plan will need to be amended to at least $547 per week in order to remain eligible for the premium reduction.
