Ontario Human Rights Tribunal

A case relating to the termination of health, dental and life insurance at age 65 was recently brought before the Tribunal.

In an interim decision in May 2018 the Tribunal ruled that the provision of the Ontario Human Rights Code which permits employers to cease benefit coverage at age 65 is unconstitutional.

Note that most insurance carriers (ie. Great-West Life, Manulife, SunLife, etc.) do not standardly have age 65 termination clauses in their health and/or dental contracts.

If concerned, review your contract or booklet to determine if your plan contravenes the OHRC.
